Duyong Old City: Introduction

Located in Duyong Island, Kuala Terengganu, is one of the most valuable architectural heritage in Terengganu. Built in 1919 and completed in 1920 by Dato' Biji Sura (Nik Mohamad bin Hitam) is the great-grandson of Tok Sheikh Duyong (mother's side), this place has become a center for religious learning and reciting the Quran for local residents. Located just 7 km from the city center Kuala Terengganu, this area is rich in cultural heritage and unique architecture. Combination of Malay and Foreign Architecture

This city is also known as Kota Tok Hakim, a unique example of Malay architecture that resembles the Malay King's Small Palace, but with a touch of foreign architecture in the decoration of the columns and stone walls that show elements Corinthian or Egypt.

Unique Architecture and Traditional Materials

One of the main features of Kota Lama Duyong is the nine buildings with thatched roofs that cover various areas such as kitchens, bathrooms, porches, verandas, and connecting bridges. Traditional materials such as honey, lime, egg white, sand, and stone are used in its construction, reflecting local wisdom. The city was severely damaged by a flood in 1986. However, conservation efforts that began in 1996 have successfully restored the city and it has been open to the public since 2005.

The buildings in Kota Lama Duyong showcase various types of traditional Terengganu Malay houses such as Bujang Berepeleh, Lima Bungkus, and Potong Belanda. The carved decoration that beautifies the porch adds to the uniqueness and beauty of this traditional architecture.

Conservation and Conservation Efforts

In 1996, Ministry of Culture and Arts has taken the initiative to restore the historic city in Duyong Island which suffered severe damage due to floods in 1986. This restoration project was completed in September 1999 without changing the original design of the building.
