City Old Duyong

Introduction

Located in Duyong Island, Kuala Terengganu, is one of the most valuable architectural heritage in Terengganu. Built in 1919 and completed in 1920 by Dato' Biji Sura (Nik Mohamad bin Hitam) is the great-grandson of Tok Sheikh Duyong (sebelah ibu), tempat ini telah menjadi pusat pembelajaran agama dan mengaji Al-Quran bagi penduduk setempat. Terletak hanya 7 km dari pusat bandar Kuala Terengganu, kawasan ini kaya dengan warisan budaya dan seni bina yang unik. Kini, kota yang bersejarah ini sudah berada di bawah penjagaan dan pengurusan Terengganu State Museum bagi memastikan tapak ini dipelihara dengan baik dan menjadi salah satu destinasi pelancongan bersejarah yang penting di Terengganu.

Unique Architecture and Traditional Materials

One of the main features of Kota Lama Duyong is the nine buildings with thatched roofs that cover various areas such as kitchens, bathrooms, porches, verandas, and connecting bridges. Traditional materials such as honey, lime, egg white, sand, and stone are used in its construction, reflecting local wisdom. The city was severely damaged by a flood in 1986. However, conservation efforts that began in 1996 have successfully restored the city and it has been open to the public since 2005.

Combination of Malay and Foreign Architecture

Kota Lama Duyong is a building complex that combines elements of traditional Malay architecture with foreign architectural influences. This provides an interesting insight into the historical development and cultural diversity of Terengganu. This city is also known as Kota Tok Hakim, a unique example of Malay architecture that resembles the Malay King's Small Palace, but with a touch of foreign architecture in the decoration of the columns and stone walls that show elements Corinthian or Egypt.

Various Types of Traditional Houses

The buildings in Kota Lama Duyong showcase various types of traditional Terengganu Malay houses such as Bujang Berepeleh, Lima Bungkus, and Potong Belanda. The carved decoration that beautifies the porch adds to the uniqueness and beauty of this traditional architecture.

In addition to being a focus for history and architecture researchers, the city offers an enticing experience for visitors who want to feel the atmosphere of the past. With a calm and peaceful atmosphere, visitors can explore this complex while enjoying the beauty of the surrounding nature.

Conservation and Conservation Efforts


In 1996, Ministry of Culture and Arts has taken the initiative to restore the historic city in Duyong Island which suffered severe damage due to floods in 1986. This restoration project was completed in September 1999 without changing the original design of the building.
