Maziah Palace
Introduction
Located in Bukit Puteri, Kuala Terengganu, Istana Maziah was built in the late 19th century and is still used for important events such as the coronation of the Sultan of Terengganu, weddings, and celebrating official royal titles. With its traditional Malay architecture that is majestic and rich in history, this palace is the main attraction for visitors from home and abroad who want to immerse themselves in the beauty and cultural heritage of this state.
History and Architecture
This Royal Palace, built with French architectural design, served as the official residence of the state's rulers in the past. Now, this palace is used for official Royal ceremonies and state celebrations, becoming the pride of the people of Terengganu. Istana Maziah was built on 10 March 1870 as a replacement Green Palace which burned before. Its construction was led by Tengku Chik Abu Bakar bin Tengku Abdul Jalil, brother of Sultan Zainal Abidin III, with the help of important individuals such as Engku Besar Raja Sayyid Abdullah bin Zin Al-Idrus, Muhammad bin Abdul Rahim (Mr. Mat), and Dato' Mata-Mata.
Construction and Modification
Wood for the construction of this palace was supplied from Dungun and overseen by Tengku Panglima Besar Tengku Muda Kechik, while the supply of bricks and lime was managed by Tengku Besar Paduka Indera. Almost 20 carpenters of Malay and Chinese descent were also involved in this construction.
Istana Maziah is an architectural masterpiece that features the delicacy of wood carvings, a characteristic feature of Malay architecture. Every inch of the palace, from the decoration of the gates to the walls of the building, exudes traditional beauty and elegance.
Renovations were carried out during the reign of Sultan Sulaiman Badrul Alam Shah (1920–1942) and Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah (1945–1979). The palace was also rebuilt in 1972 and 1998, making it an important historical landmark in the state's landscape.
Cultural Heritage and State Pride
Istana Maziah is not only a historic building but also a symbol of pride and rich cultural heritage. It invites us to appreciate and preserve the heritage passed down by our ancestors.
