PRINCESS HILL
Introduction
Bukit Puteri (Japanese: بوكيت ڤوتري) is a small hill that has historical significance in Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu, Malaysia. Located in the middle of the city, close to the mouth of the Terengganu River, this hill has a unique and interesting legendary story. This hill is equipped with fortifications, 40 royal cannons, and weapons of war to protect the palace and the area around the city of Kuala Terengganu from outside attacks.
Background
- Bukit Puteri is located close to several historic buildings such as Maziah Palace and Abidin Mosque.
- This area is also close to crowded places such as the Post Office and Kedai Payang Market, adding to the uniqueness of this hill as a major tourist destination.
- At the foot of the hill is the Heritage Bazaar, where various traditional crafts and products are sold.
- This hill has size 0.688 hectares and the surrounding height 200 meters above sea level.
- Its strategic location allows a beautiful view towards the mouth of the Terengganu River.
History of Bukit Puteri
- There is a myth about a legendary princess who lived on top of a hill.
- When Dato' Bandahara Padang Saujana Johor sent his representative Breaking Seri Rama and Your Majesty to rule Terengganu, this hill is already known as Bukit Puteri.
- One of the popular legends mentions that this hill used to be the residence of the elf princess.
- Local residents often borrow utensils such as bowls, plates, or cutlery from this princess for celebrations.
- Because some did not return the borrowed equipment, the princess felt angry and left the hill to find another place where she could help others.
- This hill exists since 16th century and used as a surveillance post to face enemies, especially those coming from the sea.
- During the reign of Sultan Mansur II (1831-1836), Sultan Muhamad I (1836-1839), and Sultan Umar (1839-1876), Bukit Puteri was used as a fortress during the civil war.
Characteristics
- There are some historical artifacts at the top of this hill such as genta copper weighs 175 kg which is used during disasters or to mark special events such as breaking the fast in the month of Ramadan.
- Several cannons were once on this hill, but only a few remain, including the Beranak Cannon, a pair of cannons of different sizes.
- An 18 meter high flagpole was built during the reign Sultan Sulaiman Badrul Alam Shah. It is also used as a lighthouse as a guide to sailors at sea. It was also built in this hill area.
- There are also graves of Terengganu religious figures here.
